Children's Page - Spring 2010
Hi! Welcome to the Children's Page of the Hare Preservation Trust!
Spring
Garden in a Baby Food jar
You need:
- A clean baby food jar with lid
- Small silk flowers
- Scissors
- Rolling pin
- White craft glue or hot glue gun (low temp for the kids)
- Green modelling clay or green play dough, this will be your grass.
- Roll out the play dough or clay with rolling pin.
- Using the mouth of the jar, not the lid, as a cookie cutter, cut out a circle. If you use the lid you will not be able to close the jar later.
- Using your chosen type of glue, glue the play dough or clay into the lid. If using hot glue, an adult should do this step.
- Using the scissors, carefully cut the flower stems to a size where they will fit into the jar once closed. It is a good idea to have an adult help with this step.
- Stick flowers into the dough or clay. If using play dough, set lids aside to dry and harden over night.
- Screw the lid onto the jar, carefully inserting the flowers into the jar.
- Decorate the lid however you like with ribbons or paints.
Egg Cup bugs!
You need:
- Cardboard egg carton
- Scissors
- Any colour paints
- Any colour Chenille stems aka pipe cleaners
- Small scissor, or sharp pencil
- White craft glue
- Medium and large pom-poms
- Googly eyes
- An adult should cut the egg cups out of egg carton and trim them neatly.
- Paint the egg cups in whatever colours you like and leave the paint to dry.
- In the meantime, make the bug's wings by cutting and bending chenille stems into ovals, hearts or circles.
- Have an adult use the tip of a small scissor, sharp pencil to poke a hole in each side of the painted egg cup and put the joined ends of each wings into the holes. If you want the wings to be farther back on the body, poke the holes closer together.
- Turn egg cup upside down and bend the ends of chenille stems against the side of the cup and use a dab of glue if you wish to help hold them in place.
- Glue either two medium sized pom-poms for buggy eyes or one large pom-pom for a head the fronts of the egg cups.
- Use more chenille stems for legs and antennae. These should be glued to the pom-pom head and can be straight or curly, use your imagination. Legs can be inserted in the sides of the egg cup with the help of an adult the same way the wings were.
- Glue the googly eyes onto the pom-poms and voila! Your bug is done!
Boo-boo Hares
Last but not least my personal favourite! Boo-boo bunnies, or in this case Hares!
Spring is the beginning of the season for playing out doors, along with the outdoors season come the possibility for bumps and bruises. This cute little Hare will help bring a smile instead of tears.
You Need:
- quare Wash Rag - Brown for our Hare or any colour that you like.
- Rubber Band - Brown or tan is best but any colour will work.
- Pom- medium brown or white for the tail and a very small pink or brown for a nose.
- Googly eyes
- Ribbon of any colour you like.
- Craft glue
- Scissors
- Start by folding your wash rag once so that it looks like a triangle with the longest flat side facing away from you.
- Roll the wash rag up starting from the point facing you.
- Fold the rolled wash rag in half evenly.
- Fold the rolled wash rag in half a second time.
- Firmly hold the folded wash rag and tie the rubber band around the side that has two folds, this will become the hare's head so the rubber band should be slightly closer to the folded end than to the open end.
- Put the hare down and fluff out it's nice long ears which are the two open ends opposite the 'head'.
- Glue the googly eyes and the small pom-pom nose in place on the hare's head.
- Tie the ribbon in a pretty bow in front of the bunnies ears to cover up the rubber band.
- Glue the medium sized pom-pom on the opposite end to be the tail.
- Let the glue dry thoroughly and it is ready to use by inserting a plastic reusable ice cube into it's tummy and holding it to a bump. You can use regular ice but I find the glue wears of more quickly that way.
They are traditionally given as baby shower gifts or spring presents along with this poem.
If a boo boo has you feeling crummy,
Stick an ice cube in my tummy.
Hold it to your boo boo tight,
Soon everything will be all right!
Bye for now,
Kitty the Hare xx
